OHI/O 2015: Ideas

Stuck on an idea for a hack? We've compiled a list of ideas from Team OHI/O and hackers abroad. May one of these inspire you.

Responsive Hackathon Showcase

Idea By: Joe Warner

A responsive website for showcasing hacks and projects as a hackathon. This website should have tags for sorting by the event and possibly a tag to sort by technologies used.

Engaging Energy

Idea By: Rehgan Avon

Most early 20’s adults are concerned about saving money and choosing a brand that they trust. How do we get this age range to actually care and engage with an energy company that currently provides customers with solar, home automation, gas, and electricity? What creative forms of engagement would be truly effective?

Bridge to Open Source

Idea By: Carey Matthew Black

An independent developer profile information store in which developers can identify their technical skills and their interests (future/desired skills). Open source projects can find developers who might be able to help their project.

Count Wikipedia

Idea By: Arnab Nandi

Wikipedia is BIG. Why not count all the words in it and make an evolving word cloud based on all edits to Wikipedia over time?

Copyright Violation Finder

Idea By: Kevin Payravi

The Wikimedia Commons (Wikipedia's sister project) is a repository of freely licensed images. Not everyone uploads free images, however. Create an app that patrols the latest uploaded files, and identifies pictures as likely copyright violations (cover art, movie scenes, video game scenes, press images, etc.).

Instant Slideshow

Idea By: Arnab Nandi

Using Chrome's Web Speech API, recognize words that people are speaking. Pipe keywords to Flickr's search and acquire quality images. Then, create fancy, animated slides with nice images and transitions. Demo a slideshow you don't need to create; just start talking, and the app will create a slideshow on the fly.

Snopes Scam Alert

Idea By: Arnab Nandi

Create a browser extension that detects if a webpage / email is part of a chain email, scam or hoax by querying Snopes and alerts the user if it is.

Involvement Fair App

Idea By: Maria Rimmel

The annual Involvement Fair at Ohio State can be hard to navigate through. Create an app that allows each student organization to drop a pin on the oval to add their location to a map for students to find them.

Awesome Counter

Idea By: Arnab Nandi

One of our mottos this year is "let's create something awesome". Using Amazon Echo's API, create an app that counts the number of times Echo hears the word "awesome" said per day. Then try to find a way to make this word counter useful!
